Abdul is very interested in Bible stories about shepherds...
but every tale he has heard so far is either about a friend who owns sheep, or about distant relatives, like his mother's people in Bethlehem. He wonders if there really could be a Bible story about him...
Abdul Ben--Saleem Reads the Bible
Props: Bible
Human: Today we are going to read Bible stories about sheep and sheherds
Abdul:Excuse me. I’m Abdul Ben Salem, the shepherd. Did you just say that there are stories about
me in that book? I would like to find myself in that book.
Human: Yes. There are stories about shepherds. You’ve got to be in here somewhere. (turns page) Oh
here is a good part. A shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on
his right and the goats on his left.(Mtt 25:32)
Abdul:No. That’s my cousin Harold that puts the goats on the left.
Human How about this one: And there were shepherds living in the fields nearby, keeping watch over
their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them and said, "Do not be afraid. I bring
you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. (Luke 2)
Abdul: No, that’s my mother’s relatives in Bethlehem. Where’s the story about me? I want to read one
about me.
Human: Oh dear. Let's try this one: "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them.
Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds
it? And when he finds it, he calls his friends together and says, `Rejoice with me; I have found
my lost sheep.'(Lk 15)
Abdul: That’s my friend Ezekiel from Cana. What a great party that was. Humus as far as the eye can
see. And grapes! Whee you!! Green and Red… (Sniffle) But that story is still not about me! It 's
not about me!
Human Don't cry. I still have another one. "The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired
hand is not the owner, so when he sees the wolf coming, he runs away. The good shepherd
stays and fights the wolf! He saves his sheep.
Abdul: Hey! My brother Jeremiah and I chased away a wolf once. I want to see that book. (Walks off
stage with Bible).
(FROM BACKSTAGE) Hey! There’s a secret door in the back of this book. I am going to climb
inside this Bible and find myself. How about you!
Human: I think he is on to something. I want to go inside too. Let's go.
